Explaining a new surgical invention from @pennengineering
A student introduces a novel steerable surgical needle his team is developing, explaining its design is inspired by a measuring tape. He shows B-roll of the needle, lab work, and a computer simulation to illustrate how it can make sharp turns to perform minimally invasive surgery near critical organs without causing damage, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

Transcript excerpt
This summer, our team is working on a novel, steerable surgical needle. And basically, what that means is that we've come up with a new needle design that's inspired by a tape spring or kind of something that you would see on a measuring tape. And we're trying to use the mechanical properties of this needle design to make really sharp turns around critical anatomical areas, maybe the brain or the heart, so that surgeons can access areas close to that and perform minimally invasive surgery without damaging nearby tissue. So a needle like this really pushes the boundaries on what minimally invasive robotic led surgery can look like and how the surgeon's expertise can be used, deliver really strong care to these patients and really improve what these outcomes look like post surgery. So really excited to be working on something like this.
