In far Northern Maine, Acadian French is fading away as fluent speakers grow older, but one local French teacher is racing to preserve this unique piece of living history for future generations. Many families in the Saint John River Valley trace their lineage back to the Acadians, members of a French ethnic group who arrived in the late seventeen hundreds after the British banished them from what are now the Better provinces of Canada. And earlier this summer, Fort Fairfield French teacher John Bure brought about a dozen fellow French teachers to the county for a week long immersion in Acadian culture, language, and history good the help of the American Association of Teachers of French. The visit culminated in a living history reenactment at the Acadian Village in Van Buren. The visit also coincided with a French mass at Saint David's Church in Madawaska, And the living history day in Van Buren featured a performance by Le Chantur Acadien, a group of
