As oceans warm with climate change, one phenomenon is becoming more frequent, marine heat waves. When the ocean heats up a degree or two degrees or four degrees, and this is centigrade, not Fahrenheit, so that's six or seven degrees Fahrenheit. That's huge. It's kind of like if your body temperature suddenly went up a few degrees. What would happen? You'd be very sick, and that's what we're seeing in the ocean. It's sort of like the ocean with a fever. When it comes to seabirds like Atlantic puffins, this can be a big problem. As ocean temperatures rapidly warm, fish that live in cooler water like herring become scarce. Puffins have to swim farther to find those fish or choose other warmer water fish they might not usually eat like the Atlantic butterfish. The butterfish, for example, is large and nutritious, but it grows in an odd shape. From its bad bone to its belly is quite deep. And adult puffins bad eat it fine, but chicks, especially small chicks, can't swallow it. When puffins have their own
