Explaining luxury versus premium goods from @adamtgroh

The creator defines the difference between premium and luxury goods, arguing that brands like BMW and Gucci are premium, not luxury. He uses the Rolls Royce vs. BMW comparison and the economic concept of Veblen goods to explain that true luxury is defined by exclusivity and doesn't compete on price, concluding that luxury is an unnecessary purchase made by choice and ability.

Transcript excerpt

BMW, Delta, Gucci, Cartier love bracelets. These are all things people commonly assume are luxury items. But honestly, they're just premium. Even though they're all things that I love, true luxuries don't compete on price and they don't seek to compete at all actually. Because no shopping for a Rolls Royce is then looking at a BMW eight series as if they are comparable options. And to explain this, we'll look at Veblen Good, which is what happens when you increase the price of a thing, the demand of it also increases. Premium feels exclusive while luxury is exclusive. Think of a one of one diamond or a Ferrari a Ferrari. These are things that were never meant for everyone and that's part of the point. Luxury is unnecessary by definition. You do it because you want to and because you rank, not because you have to by any sense of the word.
