Explaining the why behind an action from @sendybenji

The creator poses the question of why cliff jumpers throw rocks before a jump, debunks the common myth about breaking surface tension, and then provides three distinct, real-world examples from his own jumps to explain the actual reasons: to better gauge the water's surface and to check the trajectory for a safe landing.

Transcript excerpt

Why do I throw rocks when I cliff jump? I know what you're thinking. It's to break the surface tension, but this isn't really true at all. For this jump, I threw the rock just so I could see the water better because it was so glassy. But for this jump, I threw the rock for an entirely different reason. In order to land in the water, you have to not only clear the rocks, but also the dam. So I threw the rock to make sure that my trajectory was right, and that I'd land where I wanted to. This jump is a 101 feet or 31 better. So I threw the rock.
