From the April 30 to the May 1, we celebrate the Celtic festival of best, marking the seasonal shift from spring towards summer. At this time of year, Bellinus, the Celtic god of light, holds the great sun high in our skies, guiding it on its journey from east to west and lengthening our days. But holding up the sun is laborious work and one day Belanus found himself growing more and more tired until eventually he was overcome with weariness and fell fast asleep. Without bellowing us, the sun slipped from the skies and fell below the horizon plunging the world into a never ending darkness. Tier people of the Earth knew the bad had to return to its rightful path no they gathered together on hilltops and began a long night of noise and merriment to try and wake Belanus from his slumber. They danced, they sang, they stamped their feet and played loud music long into the night until at last Belanus began to stir. The sleepy sun god rose back into wakefulness and as he stood he plucked the sun from below the horizon and returned it to the skies filling the world with light once more.
