Founder explains cost of being copied from @sammicohentalks

The speaker, Matilda Djerf, discusses the significant challenges and high costs of protecting intellectual property as a creator and brand owner. She uses her fashion brand, Djerf Avenue, as a case study, explaining how their copyrighted, hand-painted prints are still copied by sellers on platforms like Amazon, and details the expensive, difficult process of fighting infringement. She concludes by highlighting that new creators and brands often lack the financial resources and power to defend their work, sharing her own journey from being unable to act to now having a legal team.

Transcript excerpt

The social media space in general, like, it's so difficult to protect your image, your images, your brand, and what you create. And I think it's almost next to impossible. And I mean, if I look at, like, Giraffe Avenue, for example, all of our prints are hand painted. We have a copyright. Everything is on our website. And then, you know, we have sites like Amazon where they sell dupes. And there was a long period where we were like, what can we do to protect our brand and the prints that are hand painted exclusively to JERF? And with, like, Amazon, for example, of course, you know, we can upload the certificates and then they will best, you know it's a whole process. But everything also, it's it costs so much money. So when you are a new rank, and also if you're, like, on the influencer side and you're a new influencer, you don't have the power. Like, unfortunately, it's very rare that you have the money and the power to do anything about it, and I think that's where it's very sad. I mean, I've had so many brands use my images. We have a team of lawyers that will help me with things like that, but that's today. I didn't have that in the beginning.
